Free Motion Mavericks - Week 325 - Elephants Quilt Top

Brown always makes me nervous.  I am aesthetically scarred from having lived through the 1970s, when brown beige, and orange threatened to smother the world, and swirly carpets left you trembling in doorways, terrified to enter a room.  Now, some fifty years later, the elephant fabric has made me face up to my fears.  It called for shades of brown, turquoise and purple (another colour that had its glory days, was that the late 60s or early 70s?).

Now the top is finished, I love it. It has been added to my little pile of cradle quilt tops so I can start binge quilting in the next month or so.  In the meantime, all the hard work I have been putting in to the allotment is paying off.  All the potatoes are planted, the onions are doing nicely, there are some self-seeded leeks that are now in orderly rows, and the asparagus will be popping up soon.  So while the weather stays dry and I am grubbing around and staring at shades of brown and green for hours, I am looking forward to my next colour matching exercise.

Here goes for Week 325:-

Many thanks to Kathy for linking up last time with her green HST quilt.  If you haven't seen her blog post yet, nip over now and see more.

If you have no free motion quilting to show, feel free to link up and show any project you like.  Here are the usual rules, but feel free to ignore them.  To keep the original emphasis, however, preference will be given to free motion quilting when featuring projects from the previous week.

If you love free motion quilting, whether you are a beginner just taking the plunge, or you have reached the stage where you can do ostrich feathers with your eyes shut and still achieve perfect symmetry, then please link up.

Remember, FMQ is FMQ, whether your machine was made last week, or it is older than your granny.

Here are the very easy and slightly elastic rules:-

1.  Link up with any recent post, ideally from the last week but within the last month, which features a free motion quilting project, whether it is a work in progress or a finish.

2.  Link back to this post in your own post.

3.  Visit as many of the other participants as possible and say hello in the comments box.

4.  The link up will remain open for five days, from midnight to midnight GMT for the long weekend, Friday to Tuesday.

So far quilters from the USA, England, Wales, Australia, Canada, Germany, Holland, New Zealand, France, Macau, Russia, Ireland, Brazil and Sweden have taken part.  The
first participant from each new country will get a special mention the following week.

  2. Hi Muv! Thank you for featuring my green table topper this week, and also stopping by my blog with your sweet comment! It always feels good to use up those little HSTs and scraps to make something lovely!

  3. Hi Muv, yes, I know exactly what you mean about those carpets and my aunt's wallpaper, mother-in-laws furnishings . . . dearie me! But I have been admiring quilts with brown as it is so much different - especially when it is a mix with some relief and brown goes with so many pretty colours that really make both pop or relax! Not so the 70s! LOL! Oh and in my bathroom I have one of those brown swirly frondy carpets - yuk! But now the swirls I see as quilting designs for the future! I really must get that quilt finished - new needles arrived in the post so no excuse now apart from Jezebel behaving like she usually does. Fine on practice pieces, move to quilt and she's a toad!
Next year building commences and soon after will be the longarm. I have too many large quilt tops to finish!
    All best wishes, Kerry

  4. Hi Muv, I love the elephant fabric, and I really understand about brown, although the combination that terrifies me is brown and orange! I actually have a very retro orange and brown flower fabric that I use occasionally for appliqué. I think that it's retro because it's that old :-) Take care.

  5. When I fell in love with Civil War repros, brown was part of the bargain! The good news is that all colors have a place at the table -- in the right project, that is. I too am starting to see progress in my community garden plot. Things I seeded weeks ago are finally sprouting. Now to get some tomato plants started!

  6. Boy do I remember 'earth tones'. I also remember the oranges and yellows. I had a bathroom with bright orange countertops. Our kitchen countertops were bright yellow. Those bright colors sure helped me wake up in the mornings.
